Background of the Study

Sleep is an essential component of overall health, particularly for the elderly, whose physiological processes and recovery mechanisms are altered with age. Sleep disturbances are prevalent among older adults and are associated with numerous health complications, including cardiovascular diseases (CVD). In Taraba State, the aging population may experience variations in sleep patterns due to factors such as comorbidities, stress, and changes in lifestyle. Studies have shown that poor sleep quality and insufficient sleep duration can increase the risk of cardiovascular problems such as hypertension, stroke, and heart disease (Sani & Bello, 2024). The impact of sleep on cardiovascular health in the elderly remains under-explored in many African contexts, including Taraba State, which necessitates a focused investigation. This study will investigate how sleep patterns among elderly patients in Taraba State are related to their cardiovascular health, providing insights that could guide better health interventions for the aging population.

Statement of the Problem

In Taraba State, sleep disorders such as insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea are common among elderly individuals, yet their effects on cardiovascular health remain under-researched. Cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among the elderly, and there is a need to understand the relationship between sleep disturbances and cardiovascular health outcomes in this demographic. This study seeks to bridge this gap by investigating the relationship between sleep patterns and cardiovascular health in elderly patients in Taraba State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the sleep patterns of elderly patients in Taraba State.

  2. To investigate the relationship between sleep disturbances and cardiovascular health outcomes in elderly patients.

  3. To recommend interventions for improving sleep quality and cardiovascular health among elderly individuals in Taraba State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the common sleep patterns observed in elderly patients in Taraba State?

  2. How do sleep disturbances impact cardiovascular health outcomes in elderly patients in Taraba State?

  3. What interventions can be recommended to improve sleep quality and cardiovascular health in the elderly population in Taraba State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Sleep disturbances are significantly correlated with cardiovascular health issues among elderly patients in Taraba State.

  2. Elderly patients with poor sleep patterns are more likely to experience hypertension and other cardiovascular complications.

  3. Improving sleep quality will result in improved cardiovascular health outcomes for elderly patients in Taraba State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on elderly individuals in Taraba State, with an emphasis on those suffering from sleep disorders and cardiovascular issues. Limitations may include self-reported data on sleep patterns, which could introduce recall bias, and challenges in determining causality between sleep disturbances and cardiovascular health outcomes.

Definitions of Terms

  • Sleep Patterns: The duration, quality, and consistency of sleep experienced by an individual.

  • Cardiovascular Health: The condition of the heart and blood vessels, including the presence of diseases like hypertension, stroke, and coronary artery disease.

  • Elderly: Individuals aged 65 years and older, typically considered more susceptible to health conditions due to aging.
